A Browser is Just a Browser, Or Is It?
Even in 2019, the browser wars continue in earnest just as they have been for many years. Many new browsers have been popping up , some with little fanfare while others have rave reviews. One browser that has unexpected great speed and appearance is the new Edge. Edge is being totally redesigned from the ground up. It is now running with a chromium base just like Google Chrome and Maxthon. I downloaded the Beta version built for Windows 7 (yes, they did a build for Windows 7 and it is amazing). This BETA build is actually called Microsoft Edge Canary. In my tests, I have had little problems using it. I am also using the Windows 10 version with very promising results. Microsoft is finally getting rid of the problem prone Internet Explorer and replacing it with a much more robust and modern browser.
I have been testing Edge with some of the more graphic intense sites such as Facebook and Twitter with excellent results in performance. I also look for errors and freezes. Not every browser freeze can be avoided but with pushing the browser hard on these social media sites, Edge out performed Chrome by a mile. It also had less webpage errors then my long standing favorite browser, Maxthon. My advice is to at least give the new Edge a try. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
Ok, so I talked about my upcoming favorite browser, now it is time to talk about my least favorite browser. That is Chrome. Google Chrome is probably one of the most memory intense of all the browsers and that will account as to why many people find it so slow. Not only can it be sluggish but it is very prone to getting unwanted extensions added without your permission. This behavior can lead to pop up ads and redirects in the searches. These redirects can in turn lead to other more serious infections. Despite all these issues, Chrome remains of the most used browsers of all time.
One of my favorite browsers of all time is Maxthon. This one of the few browsers that uses its own engine and not the one associated with Internet Explorer. It was one of the first browsers to offer a wide selection of features, such as mouse gestures, to make your surfing easier and more pleasant. It was also one of the first browsers to offer online storage of your favorites and settings so you can sync the browser to every device you own. Today, most browsers have added that feature as well. Maxthon is fast and efficient and offers 2 different engines. It includes the Maxthon engine and for sites that have issues loading it also offers an Internet Explorer mode. This feature allows Maxthon to be compatible with almost all the sites you normally browse. This browser does not allow third party extensions without interaction on your part. It is a very secure and solid browser.
We cannot forget an old time favorite called Firefox. This popular browser has been improved many times over the years and does offer fast and secure browsing. I do see unwanted extensions that are added to this browser as well but not as frequently as Chrome. If you are using Firefox and you enjoy using it, it is a very secure browser but occasionally, it will get those unwanted ad pop ups from stray extensions.
There are numerous other browsers such as Vivaldi but I really do not use them that much at all. Not enough to give it a fair rating. The few times I did use it, it was fast and had many of the modern features you expect from a browser. Like Firefox, it offers frequent updates for both security and features.
Overall, my favorite is still Maxthon and my least favorite is Google Chrome. Chrome is the only one I refuse to put on my machine.
